A practical comparison
Karu 2 or Karu 2 Pro? Match the fire to the meal
The Karu 2 and Karu 2 Pro share a second-generation name and outdoor multi-fuel idea, but they solve different pizza-night problems. Choose the standard Karu 2 for a smaller 12-inch bake and lighter oven. Choose the Pro when the larger 16-inch floor and supplied digital temperature hub with food probe are worth a much heavier station. If you want propane or natural gas, treat each burner as a separate, model-specific purchase rather than assuming “multi-fuel” means every fuel comes in the box.
Compare the actual cooking plans
| Question | Karu 2 | Karu 2 Pro |
|---|---|---|
| Standard pizza size | 12 inches | 16 inches |
| Published oven weight | About 34 lb | 62.6 lb on the product specification; support rounds it to about 63 lb |
| Stone package | One 15 mm stone | Two stones; manufacturer lists a 17-inch floor and 5.7-inch internal height |
| Temperature information included | Built-in analog oven thermometer | Ooni Connect Digital Temperature Hub plus one food probe |
| Solid fuel in the base package | Wood or cooking charcoal | Wood or cooking charcoal |
| Gas in the base package | No; a separate compatible propane burner is available | No; separate compatible propane and natural-gas burners are listed |
These are manufacturer specifications and package contents, not a side-by-side cooking test. The advertised maximum temperature is 950°F for both, but a maximum number does not tell you how quickly a particular fire heats the stone or how it behaves in a different climate.
Start with your most common pizza
If your household usually makes one 10- or 12-inch pizza at a time, the standard Karu 2 has the simpler job. Its small floor, viewing door and local thermometer fit a cook who wants to learn a wood or charcoal routine without committing to the larger Pro’s size and mass. About 34 pounds is still an oven to handle with care, and that figure excludes the table, fuel, peel and space needed around the mouth. The smaller footprint does not permit indoor use or make an enclosed patio safe by itself.
Choose the Pro when 14- or 16-inch pizzas are part of the plan, and decide whether you will use its included digital monitoring. The app connection reports temperature; the product still has a live fire and manual operation. One food probe is useful when a food’s internal temperature matters, but it is not a flame-control system. The Pro does not become a two-pizza oven simply because it has more chamber space; its stated standard maximum is one 16-inch pizza.
Two 12-inch pizzas at once is a separate layout question. Neither model’s published recommendation establishes that serving pattern, so do not infer it from stone diameter or a photograph. For simultaneous service, compare ovens with an explicitly documented two-pizza floor, or plan a sequence of launches and account for how long guests will wait.
Fuel changes the setup, not just the flavor
Both Karu base packages include a tray for dry, untreated hardwood and cooking charcoal. The manuals provide fuel-size and fuel-quantity limits, require the first-use hot burn-in and warn against cooking before charcoal has ashed over. The ovens are for outdoor use, on a flat stable non-combustible surface. They should not be left unattended, moved while hot, or stored before the ash and embers are fully cold. Wood and charcoal need active attention; neither is the same low-attention routine as setting a gas dial.
On the smaller Karu 2, the official propane accessory is the Gas Burner for Karu 12/12G/2. It is a propane burner, not a natural-gas kit. Its manual explains how the fuel tray is removed and the oven is configured for gas. It also contains inconsistent clearance wording: different sections say 24 inches at the sides and 36 inches behind, 40 inches from a structure or combustible material, and no operation within 10 feet of a structure, combustible material or another cylinder. A safe purchasing decision cannot rely on the smallest number; consult Ooni and local code for the actual site before selecting this setup.
The Pro has two separately listed gas paths. The dedicated propane burner is for the Karu 2 Pro, while the separate natural-gas burner is listed for a household natural-gas line in North America. The natural-gas burner is not a propane adapter; make sure the exact accessory, line and installation are appropriate before buying. Confirm the model-specific clearances and installation details from that burner’s current instructions. Do not splice its requirements with the wood-and-charcoal manual or assume the smaller oven’s burner fits.
How the Koda 2 Pro compares
The Koda 2 Pro is worth comparing if your real priority is a supplied phone-capable temperature hub, a food probe and a larger single pizza, but you would rather cook with gas than manage a solid-fuel fire. Its stationary stone is listed for an 18-inch pizza; natural-gas and propane are separate factory versions. It does not offer the Karu’s wood-and-charcoal base setup. The Koda can be the better match for a regular gas routine; the Karu 2 Pro is the broader match for cooks who want a 16-inch oven, a digital readout and solid fuel, with gas as an optional model-specific route.
Measure the station before ordering
Do not use pizza diameter or folded legs as a substitute for the whole station footprint. Both current Karu listings show inconsistent body dimensions across sections, so consult the latest exact-model drawing and setup instructions. Measure the support surface, the clearance to combustible walls and overhead materials, door and peel movement, and the route for carrying an unlit oven. Use a suitable outdoor position with room for the fuel cylinder if you select propane. For natural gas, follow the precise approved burner and local installation directions.
Choose the Karu 2 when a single 12-inch bake, a lighter oven and wood-or-charcoal operation are enough. Choose the Pro when the bigger pizza and included digital hub/probe change what you cook often enough to justify its weight and station. Choose neither if the essential need is indoor operation, two 12-inch pizzas together, an unattended flame or remote flame adjustment.
