Your needs, this model
Does it fit your priorities?
Can I make one 12-inch wood-fired pizza with a local temperature reading and no extra functional equipment?
Yes. The supplied tray and built-in analog thermometer support that plan, but the fire still needs active outdoor supervision.
Explore this need in the finder →Can I use a propane tank and the Karu 2 with only the equipment included in the oven box?
No. The compatible propane burner is a separate purchase and the wood/charcoal setup must be changed over; the manual prohibits combining gas and solid fuel.
Explore this need in the finder →Does the standard Karu 2 support a 14-inch pizza on its supplied stone?
No. The manufacturer specifies a 12-inch standard pizza limit for this oven.
Explore this need in the finder →The Ooni Karu 2 is the smaller of the current second-generation Karu ovens: an outdoor, 12-inch multi-fuel design with a glass door, a thermometer on the oven and a supplied wood-and-charcoal tray. It makes most sense for someone who wants to tend a live fire and usually launches one modest-size pizza at a time. The compact cooking job is the point; this is not a scaled-down way to get the Karu 2 Pro’s wide floor or digital probe setup.
What the Karu 2 actually includes
The current US product is Ooni Karu 2, second generation, SKU UU-P30300. Its single standard stone is listed for a 12-inch pizza, and Ooni specifies a 15 mm stone and a maximum temperature of 950°F. That temperature is a manufacturer maximum, not a promise that every fuel, weather condition or launch reaches a repeatable cooking result. The body is about 34 pounds before you plan for a table, fuel and the space around it. The scale photo and operating door are a useful reminder that this is a portable oven, but not a featherweight appliance to lift casually while hot.
A hinged borosilicate-glass door lets you see the bake without treating the open mouth as the only view. The door and viewing panel are useful, but they do not remove the need to turn and retrieve a pizza yourself. An analog temperature display gives a local reading; there is no supplied Bluetooth hub, food probe or motorized stone. If phone monitoring matters, a separately bought compatible Ooni Connect hub is an additional piece of equipment. It reports temperature; it does not adjust the flame or turn the pizza for you.
Pick a fuel and build the plan around it
Out of the box, the fuel tray is for cooking charcoal or dry, untreated hardwood. The manual gives real limits for small pieces of wood and how much may be in the tray. It also calls for fuel to ash over before cooking, at least a 30-minute first-use burn-in, outdoor operation, a level stable non-combustible surface and full cooling before ash removal or storage. These details matter more than the headline temperature: wood needs attention as the fire changes, and charcoal has its own lighting and ash-management routine. Neither option is an unattended or indoor way to bake.
Propane is possible only with Ooni’s compatible Gas Burner for Karu 12/12G/2, a separately purchased accessory. That burner is for propane, not natural gas; the manual says to remove the solid-fuel tray, configure the oven for the burner and never try to use solid fuel and gas together. Choose the burner as part of the plan, not as a generic conversion assumption. Its US manual has clearance instructions that do not agree across sections: it gives 24 inches at the sides and 36 inches behind in one place, then says 40 inches from structures or combustibles elsewhere, while its opening danger section says not to operate within 10 feet of a structure, combustible material or another gas cylinder. I would not fit this configuration into a tight station based on the smaller numbers; get the current official instructions and local-code advice before deciding that the available site is suitable.
Who benefits from the smaller cooking floor?
The Karu 2 is a more natural match for a cook who wants one 12-inch pizza and enjoys managing wood or charcoal, or who wants the option to add the exact propane burner later. Its roughly 34-pound oven weight is lower than the Pro’s published 62.6 pounds, so moving the unlit unit between suitable outdoor storage and a cooking station is less burdensome. It still needs a stable support, open outdoor placement, fuel storage and clear working space. A narrow table, balcony enclosure or combustible overhead structure should never be assumed safe from the word “portable.”
It is less compelling if your usual pizza is 14 to 16 inches, you want two pizzas cooking at once, or you dislike active fuel management. Those requirements point toward a larger floor or a different heat system. The Pro has a much larger 16-inch pizza capacity and supplies digital chamber-temperature monitoring plus a food probe, but it weighs substantially more and its gas options add their own compatibility and installation work. The Koda 2 Pro is a gas-first alternative with an 18-inch standard pizza limit and a supplied monitoring hub; it is not the same multi-fuel fire-tending experience. Compare the [Karu 2 and Karu 2 Pro guide](/learn/karu-2-or-karu-2-pro/) before choosing by generation name alone.
Limits to know before buying
The “12-inch” label describes the standard pizza size, not the outside dimensions of the oven or the table space required. Ooni’s product material lists mixed dimensions on the current page, so measure the actual cooking station from the current manufacturer drawing and leave room for the open door, peel, fuel work and safe clearances. The stone is not a household dishwasher part; keep water and detergents away from it and follow Ooni’s cooling and cleaning directions. Ash must be fully cold before disposal. The glass, stone and metal remain dangerous while hot, and the manual says not to leave the live oven unattended.
For a shopper who values live-fire choice, a viewing door and a single standard 12-inch bake, the Karu 2 has a coherent role. Its real boundary is just as important: one small floor, no supplied powered rotation, no phone monitoring, no included gas burner and no indoor permission. If any of those missing functions is essential, price and compare a model that supplies it rather than assuming the Karu can do it with an unspecified add-on.
