Your needs, this model
Does it fit your priorities?
Can I bake one 16-inch wood-fired pizza with phone temperature monitoring and no extra functional accessory?
Yes. The standard wood-fuel package includes the hub and one probe; the live fire still requires outdoor attention, and the hub does not control it.
Explore this need in the finder →Can the Karu 2 Pro use a household natural-gas line with phone monitoring if I am willing to buy its matching burner?
Yes, Ooni lists a separate North American natural-gas burner for Karu 2 Pro. The exact line and installation must be checked; the burner is not supplied with the oven.
Explore this need in the finder →Does the Karu 2 Pro make a supplied-equipment-only natural-gas setup?
No. Natural-gas operation requires its separate compatible burner, so it cannot satisfy a no-extra requirement.
Explore this need in the finder →The Ooni Karu 2 Pro is the larger second-generation multi-fuel oven for cooks who want a 16-inch pizza floor, more room around the food and temperature information without giving up wood or charcoal. It is a distinctly different station from the 12-inch Karu 2, not simply the same oven with a longer name. The standard package includes two stones, a digital temperature hub and one food probe. The trade is a much heavier outdoor setup and more planning around its optional gas equipment.
A larger chamber, with monitoring in the box
The current US base oven is Karu 2 Pro, SKU UU-P2EE00. Ooni describes the stone cooking floor as 17 inches across, with a maximum standard pizza size of 16 inches, and lists a 950°F maximum. Treat that as a published upper limit rather than a guaranteed time-to-temperature. The manufacturer’s manual lists two pizza stones and the Ooni Connect Digital Temperature Hub in the package; the US product page lists one food probe. The hub tracks oven temperature and the probe can report food temperature through the app. This is a monitoring arrangement, not a thermostat that controls the fire or a remote flame switch.
At 62.6 pounds on the current product specification, this is better planned as a stable outdoor station than as an oven carried out for each weeknight. A help page rounds the weight to about 63 pounds. Ooni’s product page also describes a 5.7-inch internal height. The taller chamber expands room for cooking, but does not establish simultaneous pizza counts; the documented capacity is one pizza up to the listed 16-inch size. Its windowed door and digital hub are convenience features, not substitutes for attention around an open live fire.
Wood and charcoal are included; gas is a separate configuration
The supplied tray supports wood or cooking charcoal. With wood, the manual specifies dry untreated hardwood and caps the amount added at one time and kept in the tray. Charcoal needs to ash over before food goes in. The first-use instructions call for a 30-minute hot burn-in. The oven is outdoor-only, must stand level and stable on a non-combustible surface, should not be moved while operating and must not be left unattended. It is also a manual-fire oven: expect to pay attention to fuel, flame, stone readiness and turning rather than selecting a temperature and walking away.
The propane and natural-gas choices need separate thought. The base Karu 2 Pro does not arrive with either burner. Ooni sells a compatible propane burner separately; its own product page names the Karu 2 Pro, but do not assume the smaller Karu burner or an unrelated gas kit will fit. Ooni also documents a dedicated natural-gas burner compatible with Karu 2 Pro. That is a separate accessory, requires a suitable household gas line and is not a propane-cylinder conversion. The accessory listing describes North American line requirements and directs owners to local regulations or a gas professional. Use the exact burner instructions for the chosen model and fuel. The base wood/charcoal plan and either burner plan are alternatives, never a combined-fire setup.
What choices change the fit
If you normally bake 12-inch pizzas and prefer an oven that is easier to move, the Karu 2 is a more proportionate choice. It has the smaller floor and an analog thermometer but no included hub or probe. If you want gas at a simpler, gas-first workflow, compare the Koda 2 Pro: its standard floor supports an 18-inch pizza and its hub and probe are supplied, but it does not offer the Karu’s wood-and-charcoal package. The Karu 2 Pro wins on the particular combination of large pizza capacity, included temperature monitoring and the option to choose between solid fuel and model-specific gas equipment. These are operating differences rather than a ranking.
Phone monitoring is useful when you want to see a reading without standing at the oven, but it does not turn this into an autonomous cooker. The product is still outdoors, the fire still needs supervision, and the door, stones and shell remain hot. The supplied probe also does not mean that every bake requires probing; it is an extra tool for food-temperature checks. If supplied electronics are not useful to you and you rarely make a large pizza, part of the Pro’s package may be unnecessary weight and complexity.
Plan the station before choosing the gas accessory
Do not use the pizza diameter as a proxy for footprint. The current listing and support material present different dimension figures, so confirm orientation and clearances from the latest exact-model setup instructions before setting a counter, cover or storage bay. Leave practical room to open the door, turn a pizza, handle a peel, manage fuel and route any gas hose away from hot surfaces. The manual’s safety instructions call for an open outdoor location, no operation under unprotected combustible overhead construction, a stable non-flammable support and full cool-down before moving or covering. A gas-line installation adds fuel-specific rules; it should not be improvised from the wood-fuel manual.
For a cook who regularly makes one large pizza and values a supplied digital oven reading plus a food probe, this package is unusually complete for its live-fire role. It is a poor fit for a cramped site, indoor cooking, a light carry-in routine, remote flame control or a buyer expecting gas to be included. Work through the [Karu 2 versus Karu 2 Pro guide](/learn/karu-2-or-karu-2-pro/) and the exact burner documentation if your essential requirement is propane or a natural-gas line.
