A practical comparison

Fyra 12, Karu 16 or Karu 2 Pro? Match the fire to the meal

These three Ooni ovens address different jobs, even though two share the Karu name. The earlier Fyra 12 is a pellet-fed 12-inch outdoor oven; the earlier Karu 16 is a larger wood-and-charcoal oven with separate propane and natural-gas accessory paths; current Karu 2 Pro is another 16-inch multi-fuel design with a supplied digital hub and food probe. Start with pizza size and fuel. Then ask whether a local display, phone monitoring or accessory purchase is essential.

Quick comparison of the actual operating plans

ModelBase fuel and sizeMonitoring in the base packageMain compromise
Fyra 12Hardwood pellets; up to 12 inchesNo built-in display or probePellets are topped up little and often; no documented gas option
Karu 16, first generationWood or cooking charcoal; up to 16 inchesFront-mounted digital oven thermometerLarger outdoor live fire; gas uses an exact separate burner
Karu 2 ProWood or charcoal; up to 16 inchesDigital hub and food probe; app readingsMuch heavier; separate matching gas burners; phone monitoring is not flame control

When the smaller pellet oven makes sense

Fyra 12 is the only one of this group with a pellet-only base plan. The exact manual describes a hopper, 100% hardwood pellets and frequent small top-ups; a full hopper is estimated to last about 15 minutes. That can be easier than adding individual pieces of wood, but it is not a hands-off feeder. The door remains closed during the cook except for loading or unloading, and the fire still needs supervision. It is the simplest choice if a 12-inch pizza is enough and you genuinely prefer pellets. It is not the answer for a 14- or 16-inch pizza, a propane connection, or indoor cooking.

What changes between the two 16-inch Karus

Karu 16 and Karu 2 Pro both target a larger pizza and both start with wood or charcoal, but their information and gas plans differ. Karu 16 supplies a front-mounted local digital oven thermometer powered by AAA batteries. It does not supply the Karu 2 Pro's phone-connected hub and food probe. Conversely, Karu 16 has both a separate bottled-propane burner path and a separate U.S. natural-gas burner listing; exact burners and their manuals are not interchangeable. Karu 2 Pro has its own accessories, including a natural-gas model intended only for that oven family. A digital thermometer is not remote monitoring, and a Bluetooth reading does not remotely adjust a live flame.

Do not compare the Karu 16's 88-pound shipping-carton figure with an oven's weight: its official dimension sheet labels that value as the shipping box. I could verify a 19.6-by-32-by-32.9-inch exterior dimension set, but not an oven-only carry weight from the archived exact model sources. The Karu 2 Pro's own current materials list about 62.6 pounds. If lifting is a deciding constraint, use the exact model's current manufacturer weight rather than borrowing one generation's value for another.

Let the questionnaire narrow by a real constraint

For one 12-inch pellet pizza with no added functional hardware, Fyra can fit while both 16-inch ovens are more capacity than needed. For a 16-inch wood-fired pie and a local oven display, Karu 16 is the model in this group that fits that particular display requirement. For a 16-inch wood-fired pie with phone temperature monitoring and a food probe, Karu 2 Pro is the more appropriate package. If you select natural gas and refuse an accessory purchase, neither Karu should be presented as a match: each needs its own compatible gas burner. If you require propane, Fyra drops out, and Karu 16 uses the exact Karu 16 propane burner. A 14-inch pie rules out Fyra but does not by itself distinguish the two 16-inch floors.

All three are outdoor appliances. Their manuals require safe outdoor placement, supervision and complete cooling before ash removal or storage. A 16-inch fuel-burning oven also needs more room to site than a small countertop electric oven. Follow the manual for the specific fuel, check the required clearances against your layout and local requirements, and do not assume dimensions equal clearances. For indoor use, compare an explicitly indoor-approved electric oven instead.

Model identity and availability caveats

Fyra's exact base model is SKU UU-P0AD00, although the active U.S. source surfaced as an accessories/bundle collection rather than a current base-product row. Karu 16's exact oven manual names SKU UU-P0E400, but its old U.S. and U.K. product URLs now redirect to Karu 2 Pro. Those are useful earlier-model references, not proof of present base-model inventory. Confirm the model label and package contents in a particular listing. The review links above cover each documented operating plan and its limitations; the finder keeps the generations separate rather than treating a shared brand or oven family as compatible by default.
