Your needs, this model
Does it fit your priorities?
Can I make one 12-inch outdoor pizza with supplied wood fuel and keep the oven under 27 pounds?
Yes, using the included wood-and-charcoal equipment. The 26.5-pound oven still needs a stable outdoor support and supervised fire tending.
Explore this need in the finder →Can the base oven package run propane without an extra compatible burner?
No. Use the exact Karu 12-compatible bottled-propane burner, and follow the first-generation door-off/chimney-on and clearance instructions.
Explore this need in the finder →Can its standard cooking floor meet a 14-inch pizza requirement?
No. Ooni lists the standard Karu 12 for 12-inch pizzas; a 14-inch requirement needs a larger oven.
Explore this need in the finder →The first-generation Ooni Karu 12 is a compact outdoor oven for cooks who want a live-fire routine and usually bake one pizza at a time. It weighs 26.5 pounds before fuel, burner or work table, and its supplied tray uses wood or cooking charcoal. Ooni lists it separately from the second-generation Karu 2, so check the generation and included package.
A small oven with a real fire routine
Ooni lists a 12-inch pizza capacity, a 15 mm cordierite stone and 26.5-pound oven weight. It advertises a maximum of 950°F and a pizza in as little as 60 seconds; those are manufacturer claims, not a promise for every fuel or weather condition. The single floor supports one pizza at a time. For larger pies or two pizzas together, look to a wider oven such as Karu 2 Pro.
Folding legs and the lighter body ease storage and carrying versus the newer Karu 2, which Ooni lists at just under 34 pounds. You still need a stable, level, nonflammable outdoor surface, a table or other support, safe fuel storage and room at the opening. Do not move the oven hot. Its manual says outdoor use only, warns against high winds and unattended firing, and calls for at least two hours to cool before covering or storage.
Wood and charcoal are the supplied cooking plans
The box includes the oven body, removable door, cordierite stone, fuel hatch, draft-defender plate, fuel tray and grate, chimney and cap. For solid fuel, the manual directs the cook to use cooking charcoal or dry, untreated hardwood, with each wood piece no longer than 8 inches and 1.5 inches across. It caps each addition at 0.4 kg and the tray at 0.7 kg. It also says not to cook until charcoal is ash-coated; once lit, the oven preheats for 10–20 minutes, with more fuel as needed. That is a supervised fire to tend—not an automatic thermostat or unattended preset.
The oven has no built-in thermometer. Ooni recommends an infrared temperature gun as an accessory for reading the stone surface; that is different from a continuous internal oven display or a phone-connected food probe. This matters if your finder answers require a local display or phone monitoring: the standard Karu 12 does not meet those requirements. It also has no powered stone turner in its base configuration, so the cook turns and retrieves the pizza by hand.
Propane changes the equipment and the operating setup
The exact compatible Gas Burner for Karu 12/12G/2 is an additional component for this base oven. It is specified for bottled propane, not household natural gas. Ooni says the first-generation Karu 12 must run with its door off and chimney on. The second-generation Karu 2 and Karu 12G can use the glass door closed; do not carry that newer instruction over to the older oven.
Ooni’s current Karu 12 page shows wood-and-charcoal and a “Gas burner included” selection, while the exact native product row remains one base SKU, UU-P29400, and the page also describes the burner as sold separately. I treat propane as accessory-dependent rather than inventing a distinct gas-included model number. Verify the exact cart contents if you choose that package.
For gas siting, the burner’s US/Canada manual contains several clearance statements: 24 inches at the sides and 36 inches behind, a separate 40-inch statement, and a warning not to operate within 10 feet of a structure, combustible material or another cylinder. Those are not consistent enough to turn the smaller distances into an assurance. This review’s matching plan conservatively requires 10 feet for the propane configuration; confirm the current manual, local code and the exact placement with Ooni before installation. The wood-and-charcoal manual gives no numeric clearance that I could verify, so a numeric clearance requirement is not treated as satisfied for that plan.
Which answers change the fit
Choose an outdoor, 12-inch, hand-turned wood or charcoal plan with no extra turning or monitoring hardware, and the Karu 12 is a plausible match if you accept the supervised fire routine and roughly 27-pound oven weight. Set a 14-inch minimum, an indoor location, a built-in temperature display, or automatic turning as an essential requirement and it should drop out. Propane can be considered only when you allow the exact accessory and its outdoor setup; “no extra equipment” does not make the base fuel tray a gas burner. A numeric clearance answer also needs a documented clearance on that same fuel plan, not an assumption borrowed from the other version.
When to choose another Karu
The Karu 2 keeps the 12-inch job but adds a glass viewing door and built-in analog thermometer, at a higher listed weight. Its propane burner may be used with the door closed. Karu 2 Pro is larger still: its 16-inch floor and supplied digital hub/probe suit larger pies or cooks who want phone temperature information, but its roughly 63-pound body is a poor portability substitute. For propane without burner swapping, compare a factory gas oven such as Koda 2; for indoor cooking, choose an explicitly indoor-approved electric model.
The first-generation Karu 12 suits a cook who wants a smaller wood-or-charcoal oven, values a lighter body over built-in monitoring, and has an open-air space that can accommodate the selected fuel’s documented safety setup. It is not the choice for indoor cooking, a 14-inch pie, unattended operation, phone monitoring or automatic turning. Before buying a specific offer, match the “1st Generation” label and UU-P29400 base SKU, then confirm whether the propane burner is actually included.
Key details at a glance
| Fuel versions | The base tray supports cooking charcoal or dry untreated hardwood. For propane use only the exact Karu 12-compatible bottled-propane gas burner; its official instructions require this first-generation oven door to stay off and chimney on. No natural-gas plan is confirmed. |

| Monitoring and controls | No built-in thermometer or phone hub is supplied. Ooni suggests a separate infrared thermometer for the stone surface; that does not provide continuous internal oven display, a food probe, or flame control. |
| Optional rotating setup | No motorized turner is supplied. Turn and retrieve each pizza by hand; exact compatibility of any powered turning accessory with first-generation Karu 12 remains unverified. |
| Space and measurement note | Exact model body-footprint dimensions were not established from the reviewed official page/manual; measure the actual oven and confirm clearances before designing a close-fit station. The official page lists weight, not this fact set’s exact width/depth/height. |
| Stone care | Follow the exact manual: use the outdoor, stable, nonflammable surface and supervised firing instructions. Allow a minimum two hours to cool, and do not remove ash or cover/store while embers remain. The exact burner manual warns against soap or water on the cordierite stone. |
